Ireland 2015

Travel | What’s the Craic?

July 3, 2015

As I sit waiting for my connecting flight to Ireland, I thought I would write a quick post about one of my favorite words commonly used in Irish culture that I have learned about thus far (& soon to experience!).

Craic (pronounced “crack”) is a commonly used word to describe fun/entertainment. Guess what? it doesn’t involve drugs. Seriously!

Where does this word come from? And where is this craic individuals speak of?

Craic is a Gaelic word, with no exact English translation. The closest translation means “fun” or “entertainment” in the English language.

“It has to be the most popular and most widely used Irish word in this wee country’s history.” Suzanne Strong, quoted on the University of Newfoundland website.
